Details

In The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), “Institute” refers to the Institute of Religion program.

It’s a worldwide educational program run by the Church for young adults (generally ages 18–30), though anyone is welcome to attend. Institutes are usually located near colleges and universities, or in areas with a large population of young single adults.

Here’s what it is about:

  • Religious Education: Students take classes that focus on the scriptures (Bible, Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, Pearl of Great Price), teachings of modern prophets, Church history, and gospel topics.

  • Spiritual Growth: The program is designed to strengthen personal faith in Jesus Christ and deepen understanding of His gospel.

  • Community & Fellowship: Institute also functions as a gathering place where young adults can meet peers who share their values. There are often social activities, service projects, and opportunities for leadership.

  • Support for Students: It provides a balance to secular education by offering spiritual nourishment and moral guidance alongside academic or career pursuits.

Think of it as religious education classes + a spiritual and social community center for young adult members (and friends of the Church) while they’re in college or early adulthood.
