This semester, our student organization Health Equity and Applied Learning (HEAL) is hosting an event with our international partner Her Future Coalition (HFC). HFC has been working since 2005 to ensure that survivors of trafficking and other forms of gender-based violence, have what they need to remain free, safe and independent. Their goal is to provide long term, intensive programs which address root causes and systemic injustice.

This event will feature two speakers: Catherine Wanjohi and Amanda Cunningham who will be discussing their expertise in the field and how they have managed to navigate different cultures in their implementation of sustainable community-based change.

Come join us to explore this intersection between global cultural awareness and public health.

Her Future Coalition

Amanda Cunningham is the Chief Operating Officer at Her Future Coalition, an international nonprofit combating sexual and gender-based violence through education, shelter, and job training. Her Future Coalition has served over 5,000 survivors from some of the world’s most vulnerable populations, and their work was recently recognized by The Obama Foundation’s Girls Opportunity Alliance. Before beginning this work, Amanda was a crewmember on a circumnavigation vessel where she witnessed daily the extreme dichotomy between wealth and poverty. When she returned to the United States, she opened yoga studios to build community and create inclusive spaces for health and well-being. These experiences solidified her desire to work for social justice, which by chance led her on a volunteer trip to India in 2015 where she crossed paths with Her Future Coalition. Amanda is an advocate for and ally of, many organizations doing work to fight the inequities of today’s world. Additionally, she is a Sisters of the Planet® Ambassador with Oxfam America and her writing has been featured in Redbook, Healthline, Bustle, Natalist, The Native, and SWAAY.
